Yahoo Gemini’s new ad platform has seen a few changes over the last couple of years. The ad platform recently introduced native retargeting, opening up a lot more volume to search campaigns and providing more chances to interact with those who are searching for your product or service.

There is a real case to be made for Gemini, since it leverages mobile search and native advertising to reach engaged customers across a wide network of sites.

If you’re not yet familiar with Yahoo Gemini and how to use the platform, you needn’t worry. We’ve put together a handy guide that will show you how to get started with Yahoo Gemini campaigns.

What is the Yahoo Gemini advertising platform?

Yahoo Gemini is an advertising marketplace that brings together native advertising and mobile search – the first of its kind. Mobile advertising is growing rapidly due to the massive spikes we’re seeing in mobile usage: the Yahoo network features 430 monthly active users, which gives you a great audience with a wide range of interests to market to.

According to Yahoo, being present in both search and in news streams can result in up to a 28% increase in “purchase intent, and a 31% increase in brand favorability.” And with deep targeting options, you can make sure you ad is seen by more than just a large audience – you ensure that it’s getting seen by the right none.

How to set up campaigns in Yahoo Gemini

You can choose from three different types of campaigns in Yahoo Gemini: you can get people to come to your website or landing page, you can raise awareness of your brand, or you can get users to install your app.

We’ll start by looking at the first one.

Drive traffic to your website

Once you’ve selected the option to start driving traffic to your website, you’ll be taken to a campaign setup page. The first thing you will see is the campaign setup options at the top of the page, as you’ll see in the image below.

Once you’ve named your campaign, you can start selecting some options. You now have the ability to target customers via search and native ads together, or you can target each separately. You can also choose whether you’d like to include Yahoo search partners in your campaign. If you select this option, your ad will be shown on sites across Yahoo’s extensive network.

By including “Yahoo Search Partners,” you’ll be able to take advantage of Yahoo’s search partner network. The network is made up of syndicate partners that give you a great opportunity to extend your reach. If you select this option, you’ll be able to add website exclusions – this is something that you’ll want to pay attention to while your campaigns are running, as well. If you’re getting a lot of traffic from sitexyz.com, and are finding that it’s not converting, you’ll want to exclude that site, for example.

In the image above, I’ve selected “Search and native” under the Types option. As such, I have the search and native options already checked off for me. You can also choose one or the other. For example, you may want to run native ads, exclusively. In that case, you’d simply select Native only.

Choose your target audience

Next, as you see above, you’ll be given the chance to define your audience. You’ll get the usual options that every ad platform should provide, and a decent set of interests to choose from, as well. You’ll also have the ability to choose whether you want to target only mobile devices, which is a feature lacking on most ad platforms.

Yahoo Gemini ad extensions

The great part of Yahoo Gemini is that you actually get quite a bit of text with which to talk to your audience. You can start with ad extensions to give your audience a little more information and a more detailed call to action. There are two types of ad extensions in Yahoo Gemini:

  • Sitelinks: Link to pages other than your destination landing page
  • Call extensions: A click to call button for text ads on smart phones.

You can have up to 10 extensions for a campaign and for an ad group. When displayed, viewers will see between two and six on a tablet page and between two to four on a smartphone.

Build your ad group

Here’s where you’re going to build your first ad group. Give it a name that makes sense to your needs here, and choose when you want your ads to start running. As you see on the image below, you’ll be able to choose between focusing on clicks, and also have the option to focus on conversions.

The great part here is that you’ll actually be able to set bids at different price points for your native and search ads, should you so desire. You may find that the competition is stronger in one area or the other, and you can experiment with bid prices that fit the medium, as well as the message.

Writing ads in Yahoo Gemini

By now you’re probably chomping at the bit to get an ad or two in the system. Just to show you what it would look like, I added some text into the fields, as you see below.

For your ads, you get:

  • Ad title: 50 characters
  • Ad description: 150 characters
  • Company name: 35 characters
  • Display URL: 35 characters
  • Destination URL: 2050 characters

The really great feature here is that you’ll be able to see your ads how they’ll appear in different formats across smartphones, tablets, and on desktop. So if you’re mobile and desktop, you get a clear view of what your ads will look like when they’re displayed.

Once you’re done writing your ad, just click on Save, and you’re ready to get started!
